The Wii Balance Board may be all well and good if you want to play things safe, but those looking to up the danger level a tad will no doubt want to give this new SKIGYM simulator some serious consideration, with it promising to improve your skiing ability and give you a workout in the process. Apparently, you can either hook the fully-motorized device up to your PC and play the included Alpine Ski Racing game, or simply use it on its own as a piece of exercise equipment -- we're guessing it's also only a matter of time before someone uses it to control a robot. Not surprisingly, this piece of living room clutter will also put quite a dent in the old bank account, with it running €1,649, or roughly $2,300.

Google launched Gears Beta Web Application ,which is an open source browser extension. It lets web applications provide offline services.

Advantages:

Database installation on client system
Uses data from local cache
Synchronizes data in the cache with online services.
During unavailability of network, synchronization is deferred.

Adobe launched Air:

According to Adobe , Adobe Air is a cross-operating system runtime that allows web application developers to use their existing web development skills (HTML, Javascript, Adobe Flash®, Adobe Flex™, Ajax) to build and deploy rich Internet applications to the desktop.
In other words, Adobe Air helps users to update their information to the url once they connect to the internet.

Advantages:

Installation files can be much smaller
Allows integration of the technologies together (Flash, HTML, PDF) on a much lower level than may otherwise be feasible.
Standardized and consistent security model for Adobe AIR applications and users.

Microsoft launched Silverlight.:

Silverlight is termed as a rich plugin for browsers. Its focus is on animation, graphics and video playback capabilities of Windows Presentation Foundation.

MUMBAI: MTNL shares edged higher Thursday as the state-run telecom firm debuts its 3G, or third generation,
phone services.

MTNL plans to offer the high-speed data mobile phone
service free to its high-spending mobile customers initially for a period of two months on a trial basis, according to media reports. The service is expected to be launched by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, during the Indian Telecom Summit in New Delhi.

After much postponement, India is finally on the 3G map of the world as Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) kick-started 3G services in Delhi today.

The state-owned telecom operator even has a name for the new service, and it's not mere 'MTNL 3G.' They've christened it as (c'mon, hold your breath!) MTNL 3G Jadoo.

In case you're wondering, we're not kidding about the name.

This being a soft-launch of 3G Jadoo, initially, only some parts of Delhi would have access to the service. Currently, the areas being covered are: Connaught Place, Sanchar Bhawan, Rajaji Marg, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate, and Minto Road.

So, if you have a phone that supports 3G, and needless to say, an MTNL connection with GPRS activation, take a walk around the areas listed and see if the 'E' or 'G' (that denotes connectivity) on your phone turns to 3.5G!

In case you're curious to know about the speeds being offered, connect your phone to your notebook to find out.

MTNL is not charging extra for the service introduced today as it wants its customers to get a feel of 3G's capabilities. Eventually, there will be a commercial tariff plan announced, and the registration will start after the commercial launch -- a couple of months from now.

Mumbai too will have a similar soft-launch for MTNL's 3G services two months hence, says J. Gopalan, executive director, MTNL (Mumbai).

He adds, "The first phase would include trial services to be offered in areas between the Airport and Prabhadevi. The second phase would include South Bombay."

State-owned telecom operators MTNL and BSNL have the first-mover advantage to offer 3G services in India. With Delhi services commencing today, Mumbai will follow suit in two months' time. Chennai too will get to experience 3G services in January 2009 through BSNL.

Sooner or later (MTNL plans to offer 3G services across India by mid-2009), our countrymen will be able to surf the internet with speeds up to 2Mbps on their smart phones.

MTNL will be installing 15 lakh 3G lines in the first phase of its 3G roll-out in Mumbai and Delhi (which currently have 35 lakh existing mobile lines).

Google Takes Chrome Out of Beta

After only 100 days and fifteen updates, Google has taken the "beta" label off Chrome, its WebKit based browser. Given that the company has a penchant for keeping products like Gmail or Google Docs in perpetual beta, it comes as a bit of a surprise that Google already considers Chrome to be a 1.0 product.

Since the first beta release, Google has focused on fixing stability issues especially with regards to playing Flash video), sped up the already fast V8 JavaScript engine, and added a better bookmark manager and privacy controls.

Extensions Coming Soon

According to Google, the next step in the development of Chrome will be the addition of an extension architecture similar to Firefox's. Google is also planning to release Mac and Linux versions soon.

Lots of Users Already

Here at RWW, about 5.2% of our readers used Chrome in November (which is down from the 6.3% we saw when it launched in September and a lot of folks decided to give it a try) and a lot of our writers also use it on a daily basis. In comparison, about 2% of our readers use Opera and 9% use Safari.

A New Focus on Speed

If anything, the release of Chrome engine has made all the other browser developers focus on the speed of their JavaScript engines again, which can only be a good thing for those of us who spend a lot of our days in browsers. The only missing piece that is still holding Chrome back today is the absence of a good extension architecture.

Get the rendered style of an element

I guess most of you, one time or another, has had the need to find out what style was actually rendered on an element. The easiest way to do this is through the style property followed by the specific value you’re looking for:

However, this only works if the CSS has been applied inline on the element. As we all (or at least most of us) have realized, having inline styles isn’t a very good and efficient approach. So then we move all our CSS to an external file and suddenly the style property return no values when checking it.

What the hell happened?

The style property is reserved for inline styles (ridiculous, if you ask me), so you need to find another way to do it. Of course, then, there’s one standard way and one Microsoft way.

I have put together a function named getStyle (yes, the name is supposed to be funny) to solve this issue for you:

I’ve updated one line for IE. The previous code worked fine as well, it’s just a matter of personal preference when it comes to code syntax.

The first parameter is an object reference to the element you want to check, the second is the CSS name of the property you want to know the rendered value for.

Interesting to know is that specific values will return a value even if it was applied by shorthand in the CSS. For example, this will work just fine:

An other interesting thing is that Firefox, Opera and Safari will returned the actual pixels of a font size applied with em, while IE only return the value in em.

The reason that it doesn’t work in IE 5.0 is having a function in the replace method as a second parameter. You might want to put this in a try...catch clause if you expect any users with that version, like this:

About SAP and its use

ERP Software is short for Enterprise Resource Planning software. ERP software aids and controls the ERP management system, which is a system that integrates and automates all facets of business operations. This includes planning, manufacturing, and sales, while more recent ERP software products encompass marketing, inventory control, order tracking, customer service, finance and human resources as well.

SAP is an acronym for "Systeme, Anwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung", which means "Systems, Applications and Products in data processing". Slife 2.0 for Windows Leaves Beta

Originally only offered for the Macintosh, the Windows version has been in beta since January. IT sector apprehensive of government action

According to G. Vijayaraghavan, former Chief Executive Officer of Technopark, the government decision would be damaging to the whole sector. “While most IT firms have tightened their belt in the wake of the global recession, the decision to trim the workforce is nothing new. It happens every year. We are not talking of a mass retrenchment here. None of the laid off employees have submitted a complaint to the government,” he said.

Satish Babu, president InApp software services and secretary of the Group of Technopark Companies (GTECH), said the government action amounted to an infringement on the rights of the companies. He felt that the action may have been driven by political considerations.

“There was nothing for the government to be concerned about. Dire measures were uncalled for. No company is firing left and right. IBS, the firm in question, is not a fly-by-night operator. It is a well- established company with several years of experience and global-level operations. By creating a false impression of retrenchment, the government will only erode the credibility of the IT sector,” he added.

Mr. Babu said most companies were putting a freeze on recruitments rather than laying off employees in their bid to stand the global meltdown. “It is unfortunate that the government has adopted a confrontationist approach when it should be working with the IT sector to help it tide over the situation,” he said.

Desperate measures

Mr. Vijayaraghavan said IT firms may be forced to take desperate measures to tackle the recession. “Modern industries will need to take timely action in the face of a crisis. As many as 1,000 to 2,000 employees in Technopark may lose their jobs if the economic crisis lasts for more than six months. But all of them will return to their jobs once the crisis is over,” he said.

He flayed the government decision to carry out the inspection in full media glare. “It is a suicidal approach that could scare off investors. Already, three or four companies have moved out of Technopark over the last one year. There is urgent need for the government to send out positive signals to restore the confidence of investors,” he said.

Apple sold 10 million iPhones in 2008

Hi everyone,

This is unbelievable!!!!!

By using some fairly interesting IMEI collection, the folks at Mac Observer have found that Apple sold 10 million iPhones in 2008, reaching and potentially surpassing Steve’s original stated goal. By looking at phones sold over the last few months, Mac Observer’s “Apple Finance Board” found that the phone has gone through nine 1 million unit runs. Adding this to the known sales they found the total number was far above analyst expectations.

Apple has been buffeted of late by bad news and this little gem might just pump things up a bit - but don’t count on it. After falling for blog-based news (”Steve Jobs has shed his skin and exposed his lizard-like internal carapace!”) multiple times, I suspect folks investing in Apple are very wary.

What does this mean? Well, 10 million is miniscule in the phone market but it still means the iPhone has legs. This obviously takes into account the international sales now streaming through Asia and Europe.

The Indian software industry has grown from a mere US $ 150 million in 1991-92 to a staggering US $ 5.7 billion (including over $4 billion worth of software exports) in 1999-2000. No other Indian industry has performed so well against the global competition.

The annual growth rate of India’s software exports has been consistently over 50 percent since 1991. As per the projections made by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) for 2000-2001 (April 1, 2000 - March 31, 2001), India’s software exports would be around $ 6.3 billion, in addition to $ 2.5 billion in domestic sale.

Today, India exports software and services to nearly 95 countries around the world. The share of North America (U.S. & Canada) in India’s software exports is about 61 per cent. In 1999-2000, more than a third of Fortune 500 companies outsourced their software requirements to India.

NASSCOM’s survey during 1999-2000 indicates a reversal in the mode of services offered by India. In 1991-92, offshore services accounted 5 per cent and on-site services 95 % of the total exports. However, during 1999-2000 offshore services contributed over 40 percent of the total exports.

The NASSCOM - McKinsey report on India's IT industry

According to a NASSCOM-McKinsey report, annual revenue projections for India’s IT industry in 2008 are US $ 87 billion and market openings are emerging across four broad sectors, IT services, software products, IT enabled services, and e-businesses thus creating a number of opportunities for Indian companies. In addition to the export market, all of these segments have a domestic market component as well.

Other key findings of this report are:

Software & Services will contribute over 7.5 % of the overall GDP growth of India
IT Exports will account for 35% of the total exports from India
Potential for 2.2 million jobs in IT by 2008
IT industry will attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of U.S. $ 4-5 billion

Exports of $50 billion in 2008

Promotion of IT - governmental incentives:

With the formation of a new ministry for IT, Government of India (GOI) has taken a major step towards promoting the domestic industry and achieving the full potential of the Indian IT entrepreneurs. Constraints have been comprehensively identified and steps taken to overcome them and also to provide incentives. Thus for example, venture capital has been the main source of finance for software industry around the world. However, majority of the software units in India is in the small and medium enterprise sector and there is a critical shortage of venture capital kind of support. In order to alleviate this situation and to promote Indian IT industry, the Government of India has set up a National Task Force on IT and Software Development to examine the feasibility of strengthening the industry. The Task Force has already submitted its recommendations, which are under active consideration. Norms for the operations of venture capital funds have also been liberalized to boost the industry. The Government of India is also actively providing fiscal incentives and liberalizing norms for FDI and raising capital abroad.

Recently, an IT committee was set up by the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India, comprising Non Resident Indian (NRI) professionals from the United States to seek expertise and advice and also to step up U.S. investments in India's IT sector. The committee is chaired by Minister of Information Technology, Government of India, and the members include Secretary, Ministry of Information Technology and a large number of important Indian American IT entrepreneurs.

The group will:

Monitor global IT developments and refine Indian IT policy to meet global requirements. Specifically, this will help angel investors, venture creators and incubation;

Promote the growth of human resource development in the IT sector with the aim of creating quality-based education;

Promote R&D in the sector by identifying thrust areas and drawing up a blueprint for action.

India’s most prized resource in in today’s knowledge economy is its readily available technical work force. India has the second largest English-speaking scientific professionals in the world, second only to the U.S. It is estimated that India has over 4 million technical workers, over 1,832 educational institutions and polytechnics, which train more than 67,785 computer software professionals every year. Government of India is stepping up the number and quality of training facilities in the country to capitalize on this extraordinary human resource. It is the knowledge industry that will help take the Indian economy to a sustained higher rate of growth and the policy makers are fully aware of this.

In this post I am going to explain how we can call a C# asp.net webservice with parameters through extJs HttpProxy class.

You have to do this:

var storeName = new Ext.data.Store

In webservice you have to write:

[WebMethod]

Context.Response.Write(outString);

Secure file download in Asp .net

I was trying my hands on Asp .net after a long time, and then came across an interesting problem. I was trying to write a function to make a secure download of web based files, that is I was trying to hide the path of file from user, who is going to download a file from my site. I googled a lot, but could not find the exact thing, that I was looking for. Then I collected the pieces of codes from my search, and created that function out of it. This function can be called from any event and will initiate the download without letting users know the path of target file.

The code goes here:

FileInfo f1 = new FileInfo(path + "/" + fileName);

if (f1.Exists)

{

Response.Clear();

Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + f1.Name);

Note: To use this code, one must use the System.IO namespace.
